Through the Years

Roots in Railroads

Railroad and coal magnate John Sutphin Jones arrives in Granville, marries local Sarah Follett, and settles at Monomoy Place before building their grand estate, Bryn Du. In 1908 he purchases the land on East Broadway, adjacent to their home, to create a refined country inn and golf club for travelers and the towns residents.

A Vision Takes Shape

Architect Frank Packard designs the inn in Jacobethan Revival style; golf legend Donald Ross plans an adjoining 18-hole course, and The Granville Inn and Golf Club opens on June 26, 1924, with 5,000 guests, lavish décor, and a menu featuring Lobster à la Parisienne. The property earns national attention as “the most costly small hotel in America.”

Renovations & Local Stewardship

In 1950, the inn adds nine guest rooms and updates its interiors, maintaining a fine balance between preservation and modernization. The Kent family acquires the property in 1976, transforming the oak-paneled lobby into a dining room and opening The Tavern after Granville lifts its alcohol ban. Granville Hospitality, a group of local investors, purchases the inn in 2003.

A Living Landmark

Denison University buys the property and undertakes a sweeping renovation—adding event spaces, a modern kitchen, new guest rooms, and enhanced accessibility throughout. Reopened as a beautifully restored, modern inn, it remains a cornerstone of community life and university hospitality.
